Abstract:
Objective: To explore the effects of the food contained turmeric on bone tissue in ovariectomized rats. Methods: The osteoporosis model was established by removing the ovaries of the rats. The animals were divided into sham group, model group, turmeric group, and excluding turmeric group, continuous feeding 90 d.Then, the weight, femur length, and bone parameters of each group were measured.Blood was gained from the eyeballs of rats.Osteoprotegerin ( OPG) and receptor activator for nuclear factor Κ-β ligand ( RANKL) level were measured by ELISA method. Results: The rats weight of turmeric group increased relatively close to the control group ( p > 0.05) .The turmeric group had significant increase ( p < 0.01) in the level of OPG, femur length, trabecular thickness, and the number of osteoblast, as well as significant decrease ( p < 0.01) in the level of RANKL, trabecular space, and the number of osteoclast compared to the model group. The turmeric group had significant increase in the level of OPG and trabecular thickness ( both p < 0.05) , femur length and the number of osteoblast ( both p < 0.01) , as well as significant decrease in the level of RANKL and trabecular space ( both p < 0.05) , the number of osteoclast ( p < 0.01) compared to the excluding turmeric group. Conclusion: The results indicated that the food contained turmeric had inhibitory effect on bonetissue degeneration in ovariectomized rats.
