Biofilm Formation, Antimicrobial Resistance and Control of Vibrio Based on Quorum Sensing: A Review

  • : Vibrio, Gram-negative pathogenic bacterium, are commonly found in aquatic environments. Not only it can cause food poisoning and wound infection in humans, but also easily lead to spoilage in seafood. Biofilm formation regulated by quorum sensing is an important reason for Vibrio resistance and infection. In this study, the action mechanism of quorum sensing, biofilm formation and drug resistance in Vibrio are reviewed. The quorum sensing system in Vibrio is summarized. The correlation between quorum sensing system and biofilm in Vibrio is discussed. Effect of biofilm formation on drug resistance of Vibrio is mainly elaborated from three aspects in limiting the penetration of fungicides, inducing the adaptability of bacterial phenotype and horizontal transmission of drug resistance genes. In addition, the research status of quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs)for control Vibrio biofilm, including chemical synthetic QSIs, QSIs derived from plant and microbiological, is further summarized. The study aims at providing reference for solving the problem of seafood spoilage and foodborne diseases caused by Vibrio.
