Identification and Safety Assessment of the Migration of Intentionally and Non-intentionally Added Substances in Food Contact Recycled PET Product

  • In order to assess the migration risk of non-intentional/intentional added substances to recycled PET materials, a method of screening these substances for recycled PET products was established using liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and head-space gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results showed that: A total of 6 compounds were screened in food simulations after migration experiments, of which 4 substances, such as methyl oleate, methyl palmitate, triethylene glycol bis(2-ethylhexanoate) and triethylene glycol caprate caprylate were intentional added substances, methyl linoleate and 1, 2-bis-(4-carboxy-benzoyloxy)-ethane were non-intentional added substances. The detected substances were not in the GB 9685-2016 substance list and not allowed to be used. Under the TTC law, the detected substances were Cramer I substances, their exposure was significantly lower than the safety exposure threshold of 1.8 mg/person/day, low probability of adverse health effects to human health.
