Preventive Effects of Sugar-Free Hawthorn Rolls on Constipation in Mice

  • In this study, xylooligosaccharide(XOS)and xylitol(Xyl)with the ratio of 25:75,50:50 and 75:25 were used to prepare sugar-free hawthorn rolls by replacing sucrose. The sensory characteristic of sugar-free hawthorn rolls and its preventive effects on diphenoxylate-induced constipation in Kunming mice were estimated. The texture, chromatic aberration and sensory evaluation of sugar-free hawthorn rolls with XOS accounting for 25% or 50% of the total sugar were not significantly different with those of the traditional hawthorn rolls containing sucrose(P>0.05). Compared with XOS and Xyl,the middle-dose and high-dose groups of hawthorn rolls substituted with 50% XOS and 50% Xyl had significant higher preventive effects on constipation in mice(P<0.05). Compared with model group, small intestinal propulsion rate of constipated mice fed with low(3 g/kg·bw/d),middle(6 g/kg·bw/d)and high-dose(9 g/kg·bw/d)of XOS/Xyl(50:50)substitution was increased by 76.0%,108.9% and 83.8%,respectively,and the wet weights of defecation within 6 hours were increased by 65.4%,82.7% and 93.3%,respectively. Accordingly,MTL level was increased by 24.0%,26.6% and 25.1%,respectively,and the total contents of lactic acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid were increased by 68.7%,72.8% and 121.6%,respectively. Taken together, the low, middle and high-dose administration of XOS/Xyl(50:50)substituted hawthorn rolls have preventive effect on constipation in mice, especially for the middle and high-dose groups.
