Screening of Preponderant Lactobacillus for Lowering Cholesterol

  • In order to enrich the probiotics resources for lowering cholesterol and lowering glycemia, ten Lactobacillus strains were used as experimental subjects to test the lowering cholesterol ability, bile salt hydrolase(BSH)activity and α-glucosidase inhibition rate in vitro,as well as the tolerance to artificial gastric juice and bile salt, and then evaluate of cell adhesive capacity and tolerance to antibiotics of dominant strains. The results showed that the degradation of cholesterol by Lactobacillus plantarum LH-511,Lactobacillus plantarum 10-12 and Lactobacillus plantarum 10-4 was above 50%,which was significantly higher than that of the commercial strain Lactobacillus plantarum 299V(p<0.05). The inhibition rate of Lactobacillus plantarum 10-12 and Lactobacillus plantarum SD-H9 to α-glucoside was 41.7% and 40.1%. Lactobacillus plantarum LH-511,Lactobacillus plantarum 10-12,Lactobacillus plantarum 10-4,Lactobacillus plantarum 10-14 and Lactobacillus casei OF48-2pH5 have preferable BSH activity,α-glucosidase inhibition, stress resistance and adhesion to HT-29 cell. However, only Lactobacillus plantarum LH-511 and Lactobacillus crispus OF48-2 pH5 passed the safety test of 10 antibiotics. In summary,Lactobacillus plantarum LH-511 and Lactobacillus casei OF48-2pH5 had good cholesterol-lowering and glycemia-lowering potential, and had passed the test of stress resistance, adhesion and safety, which can be used for further development and application.
