Scavenging Effect of Lycopene on Free Radical of Human Serum

  • In this study, the scavenging effect of lycopene on free radical of human serum was investigated. Volunteers were taking different doses(5,10 and 15 mg/d)of lycopene, respectively. After adding the lycopene in 15,30,45,and 60 d,the total antioxidant capacity in the blood(T-AOC)and the content of superoxide disproportionation enzyme(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX)and malondialdehyde(MDA)were measured. Moreover, after adding the lycopene in 60 days, all the participants would do inexhaustible movement in next day to measure the changes of T-AOC,SOD,GSH-PX and MDA content in before and after the movement. Results showed that compared with the blank control group, after volunteers taking lycopene, with the increase of times and doses, enzyme activity of GSH-PX and SOD tend to rise, and the enzyme activity of GSH-PX showed significant difference only when the intake days of the low-dose group were 15 d,and the enzyme activity of SOD showed significant difference only when the intake days of low and medium dose groups were 30 d,and the rest showed no significant change with days and dosage increasing. The T-AOC tend to rise and no significant change was observed with the days and dosage increasing. The MDA content showed decline and no significant change was observed with the days and dosage increasing. Moreover, after the strong exercise, the content of T-AOC,SOD and GSH-PX in different dosage groups decreased significantly, while the MDA content increased significantly. Taking lycopene capsules can reduce the consumption of antioxidant enzymes and MDA content in vivo. In conclusion, lycopene could effectively eliminate free radicals in human serum.
