Inhibition Effect in Vitro of Crabapple Fruits Extracts on BGC-803 Gastric Cancer Cell Lines

  • Took Malus domestica ‘Fuji’ as control, the total phenolic contents (TPC) and in vitro inhibition effect (VIE) on human gastric BGC-803 cell lines of four crabapples fruits extracts were detected. TPC were determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. Individual phenolic compounds were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Inhibition effect on human gastric BGC-803 cell lines was detected using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and inverted microscope. The results showed that the TPC range of five fruits extracts was 405.99~4663.30 mg GAE/100 g, in which the TPC of crabapples were higher than Malus domestica ‘Fuji’. The results of inhibitory effect (IC50 value) of five fruits extracts on human gastric BGC-803 cell lines showed that red-fleshed Malus ‘Adams’ (42.29 μg/mL) and Malus ‘Red splendor’ (64.67 μg/mL) were better than yellow-fleshed Malus micromalus ‘Haihongguo’ (1466 μg/mL) and Malus micromalus (2291 μg/mL), and four crabapples were all better than Malus domestica ‘Fuji’ (3476 μg/mL). The individual phenolics of five extracts mainly contained procyanidins B1, procyanidins B2, (+) -catechin, and (-) -epicatechin. Malus ‘Adams’ and Malus ‘Red splendor’, which were varieties with red flesh, had a higher content of cyanidin-3-galactoside and oligo procyanidins than yellow-fleshed Malus micromalus ‘Haihongguo’, Malus micromalus, and Malus domestica ‘Fuji’.
