Potential Intervention for Diabetes Mellitus of Two Bifidobacterium animalis Strains

  • In order to obtain a strain that had a potential intervention for diabetes, the antioxidative properties, inhibition of α-glucosidase activity, the resistance toacid, bile saltsand the simulated digestive tract, adhesion and adhesion inhibition of Bifidobacterium animalis BB12,15-2 and 20-9 were studied in this study. The results showed that the hydroxyl radical scavenging ability and reducing ability of Bifidobacterium animalis 15-2 intact cells and cell extracts were higher than those of 20-9 and BB12.The inhibitory rate of α-glucosidase activity of 15-2 was higher than that of 20-9,the inhibitory rates of both were 26.90% and 12.83%,respectively.While BB12 had no inhibitory effect on the activity of α-glucosidase.The survival rate of 15-2 after simulated digestive tract and the adhesion rate to Caco-2 cells were 88.91% and 27.59%,respectively,stronger than that of 20-9 and BB12.Moreover,15-2 was also more tolerant of acids than 20-9 and BB12,although slightly inferior to BB12 in bile salt and adhesion inhibition, but still better than 20-9.The results indicated that Bifidobacterium animalis 15-2 was a candidate for treatment of diabetes mellitus.
