Comparison study on activities of the ethanol extract from five parts of Physali alkekengi L.

  • Objective: The antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer and anti- inflammatory activities of the different parts of Physali alkekengi L. were evaluated in this study. Methods: The antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis of the alcohol extracts of different parts were investigated using Oxford cup method. The antioxidant activities were evaluated by 2,2- diphenyl- 1- picrylhydrazyl( DPPH)scavenging assay. The inhibition effects of human cancer cell lines MCF- 7,MDA- MB- 231 and Bel7402 were detected by Alamar Blue assay. NO assay kit was used to determine the anti- inflammatory activity. Results: The alcohol extract of fruit showed the highest antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Besides, the alcohol extract of leaves showed the highest antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis. The diameters of antibacterial circle were( 16.63 ± 0.49),( 14.97 ± 0.37),( 15.83 ± 0.29) mm,respectively. The alcohol extract of calyx exhibited 96.79% ±2.09% DPPH radical cavenging efficiency at the concentration of 5 mg / m L,which demonstrated the similar antioxidant activity with the same dose of VC.All alcohol extracts of five parts showed inhibition activities on human cancer cells in a dose- dependent manner. The alcohol extracts of leaves showed better inhibition activities against MCF-7.Furthermore,the calyx showed better inhibition activities against MDA- MB-231 and Bel7402.The IC50were( 31.46 ± 1.49),( 48.84 ± 1.69) and( 65.48 ± 1.82) μg /m L.In addition, the alcohol extract of leaves showed the highest anti-inflammatory activity and the stem was lowest.NO production were 11.01 and 27.73 μmol / L at the concentration of 10 μg / m L.Conclusion: P.alkekengi L.has antibacterial,antioxidant,anti- tumor and anti- inflammatory activity. These results provided theoretical basis for the functional development, further utilization of P.alkekengi L.
