Effect of total flavonoids extract from banana peel on diabetes and its complications

  • To investigate the hypoglycemic effect of total flavonoids extract from banana peel on diabetic rats. Methods:A total of rats were divided into normal control group, model control group, drug treatment control group and total flavonoids groups at low, middle and high doses. The levels of body weight, serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol of rats were determined after feeding for four weeks. Results:Total flavonoids from banana peel significantly reduced the levels of serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in alloxan induced diabetic rats (p<0.05) , and significantly increased the level of higy-density lipoprotein cholesterol and body weight at middle and high doses ( p < 0. 05) . Conclusion : Total flavonoids from banana peel possess significant hypoglycemic activity, and could improve the lipid metabolism disorders caused by diabetes status.
