Study on extraction, analysis and antioxidant activity of lipid from the viscera of starfish (Asterina pectinifera)

  • The objective of this study was to extract lipid from starfish (Asterina pectinifera) viscera by enzyme assisted solvent method, as well as evaluate its protective effect on cellular oxidative damage. Results indicated that the lipid yields were 6.1%±0.02%, 6.77%±0.06%, 7.96%±0.04% and 5.48%±0.02% by using alkali protease (Alc) , neutral protease (Neu) , papain (Pap) and trypsin (Trp) assisted solvent method, respectively. The fatty acids of the extracted lipid were analyzed by GC-MS. Results showed that the total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) accounted for 50.11% ±0.21% (Alc) , 47.67%±3.78% (Neu) , 50.45%±0.76% (Pap) , and 40.84% ±0.14% (Try) of the total fatty acids, respectively. Among them, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenic acid (DHA) were dominant. Moreover, the lipid from starfish viscera showed a certain cellular antioxidant activity and protective effect on oxidative damage of the liver cells.
