Study on anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory activity of Capsicum annuum leaves polyphenols

  • Polyphenol extracted both crude and refined had anti-oxidant and anti-acute inflammatory activity by the experiments of ABTS+ radical and DPPH radical scavenging, iron reduction and mice’s auricle swelling-inhibition. The refined extract ’s median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ABTS+ radical scavenging , DPPH radical scavenging and iron reduction ability were 0.700, 0.643, 0.758mg/mL, respectively. Results were in the same order of magnitude of the reference substance VC which indicated that polyphenols extract could be used as an effective natural anti-oxidants. The extract, both crude and refined with the dose of 600mg/kg, could significantly inhibit auricle swelling induced by xylene in mouse and the swelling inhibition ratios were 59.84% and 62.69% (p<0.01) , respectively. Furthermore, the content of PGE2 in mice edema ear was respectively decreased from 32.41A/g to 19.27A/g, 16.51A/g (p<0.05) . The extract were also proved to be non-toxic for the assay of serum biomarkers (including alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transanimase (AST) for liver injury) during the 5d. In summary, this study indicated that polyphenols extract of Capsicum annuum leaves had high anti-oxidant and anti-acute inflammatory activity but non-toxic, which provided a theoretical basis for the further research of the comprehensive development of Capsicum annuum resources.
