Analysis of antioxidant properties of pine polyphenols from two species of Pinaceae in vitro

  • The antioxidant properties and phenolic contents of pine bark from Pinus koraiensis and Picea koraiensis were examined.Three phenolic compounds parameters (total phenols, proanthocyanidins and flavonoids) and three antioxidant properties parameters (reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging and hydroxyl radical scavenging) were measured. The result showed that both pine polyphenols from Pinus koraiensis and Picea koraiensis showed high reducing power and strong ability to scavenge free radicals such as OH.and DPPH..Two kinds of bark contained high total phenol and proanthocyanidins, relatively low flavonoids.Proanthocyanidins were the most important components of pine polyphenols and thus played an important role in their antioxidant activities.Pine polyphenols had high antioxidant activity, and it could be as a natural antioxidant and widely used in the field of food, cosmetic, functional food and medical.
