Study on the bacteriostatic activity, anti-inflammation, analgesic and antipyretic effects of extract from Lonicera bud

  • Objective:To study the bacteriostatic activity, anti-inflammation, analgesic and antipyretic effects of extract from Lonicera bud. Methods:The antibacterial activity of the extract against six common bacteria was assessed by measuring its MIC and MBC by the disk diffusion method and the microporous dilution method. The analgesic effects of Lonicera bud were assayed by the formaldehyde test and the writhing test in mice. The anti-inflammation effects of Lonicera bud were tested by the mouse's both ears edemata caused by dimethylbenzene and rat's foot swelling caused by carrageenan. The antipyretic effects of the Lonicera bud extract was tested by using the animal heating method caused by yeas. Results:Lonicera tea extracts in vitro on the 6 kinds of bacteria has significant bacteriostatic effect. The respectively of MIC was 375, 187.5, 93.75, 187.5, 187.5, 187.5mg·mL-1.MBC was 1500, 750, 375, 1500, 750, 1500mg·mL-1.The extracts exhibited excellent antimicrobial activities under acidic conditions (pH1~3) , whereas both high-temperature treatment and long-time UV illumination attenuated the antimicrobial activities.Extctra from Lonicera bud (15g·kg-1) significantly increased the pain threshold of mice in the formaldehyde test compared to the control, and reduced the writhing number, and obviously inhibited edemata of the mouse's ears caused by dimethybenzene by 36.62% and that of the rat's tarsus caused by para-carrageenin as well as reduced the elevated body temperature induced by yeast. Conclusion:Lonicera tea extracts had the bacteriostatic effect on the 6 kinds of bacteria in vitro.Extract from Lonicera bud had a anti-inflammatory and analgesic antipyretic effect to some extent.
